With a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Big Ten Tournament top-seed Indiana, Ohio State’s men’s soccer season came to an end Sunday in Bloomington, Indiana.
Ohio State (7-11-1, 1-6-1 Big Ten) failed to place a shot on goal against No. 9 Indiana (13-2-3, 7-1-0), outshot 8-5 overall.
Indiana junior forward Thomas Warr dribbled the ball into the left corner of the box and passed it back to freshman forward Joshua Penn, who ripped one past senior goalkeeper Parker Siegfried for a 42nd minute goal to open the scoring.
The Buckeyes never caught up.
After the goal, the momentum slid in favor of the Hoosiers. Indiana had a man advantage for most of the second half after redshirt sophomore Devyn Etling received a red card at the 50th minute. Etling is the Buckeyes’ second-leading point-scorer, and his absence was a significant blow to Ohio State’s efforts at a comeback.
Indiana put the game away with an 85th-minute goal by redshirt junior defender A.J. Palazzolo, which was assisted by junior defender Spencer Glass.
Ohio State gave Indiana trouble most of the first half. The Buckeyes outshot the Hoosiers 4-3 and had multiple chances to score early, including a 12th minute shot by junior defender Joe Ortiz.
Indiana took control in the second half however, and outshot the Buckeyes 5-1. The Hoosiers also had six corner opportunities to the Buckeyes two.
Ohio State’s season concludes without an NCAA tournament berth, but the team improved from one win in 2018 to seven in 2019.
