Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey brought out its best against Ohio State (17-8-5, 10-6-4 WCHA) this weekend, as Minnesota Duluth redshirt senior goaltender Maddie Rooney saved 87 shots in the weekend series, securing a sweep for the Bulldogs (15-9-4, 10-2-2).

Game One

Minnesota Duluth captured a 5-4 overtime win after a back-and-forth battle Friday.

As the clock ticked down in the third period, Ohio State junior forward Tatum Skaggs recorded her second goal of the contest to tie it at 4-4.

The goal scored by Skaggs was enough to send the teams into a five-minute, 5-on-5 sudden-death overtime.

In overtime, the Buckeyes mustered two shot attempts, both saved by Rooney.

On the Bulldogs’ only shot attempt of the period, junior forward Anne Klein scored the game-winning goal.

Minnesota Duluth secured its first victory over Ohio State since January 2019, despite a 45-30 shooting edge for the Buckeyes.

Each side recorded two goals in the first period, with a 2-1 edge for Minnesota Duluth in the second before Skaggs tied the score in the third.

Game Two

In game two, Ohio State only accounted for one goal despite a total of 47 shot attempts.

Rooney’s .979 save percentage guided the Bulldogs to a 4-1 win.

Minnesota Duluth took its initial lead, which it never relinquished, on a shorthanded goal by senior forward Sydney Brodt 11:54 into the first period.

The Bulldogs gathered two more scores in the second to expand their advantage before Skaggs’ third goal of the series cut the lead to 3-1 less than three minutes into the final period.

Minnesota Duluth sophomore forward Gabbie Hughes scored an empty net goal with 1:57 remaining in the third to seal a 4-1 victory.

The Buckeyes lost with a significant shooting advantage once again, this time at 47-28.
