Sitting alone outside of Denney Hall on the first day of classes, all Shannon Chenoweth could think of was the resentment towards her parents for forcing her to transfer to OSU.”I was sitting by myself when I saw the president (E. Gordon Gee) walking around introducing himself to the students,” Chenoweth said. “Then he came up to me, introduced himself and asked who I was and what my major was. It was great, because it changed my entire outlook on the campus and the time I was going to be spending here.”Chenoweth, a senior majoring in child and family development, said Gee’s introduction made her feel comfortable and relaxed. “I thought it was great to see a president of such a large university actually out greeting students. He didn’t have to do that, but he did and it made all the difference in the world,” she said.Chenoweth is not the only student who thought Gee’s interaction with the students had a positive influence around campus.”When the riots occurred on 12th avenue, Gee went door-to-door to talk to the students. It was nice to see that he actually cares about what happens around here,” said Matt Dellipoala, a senior majoring in history.According to students, Gee’s visibility around campus has always been a big part of his personality and making himself approachable to students.Gee’s decision to leave OSU and accept the presidency at Brown University has evoked some reservations from several students.”Gee has always been such a vocal proponent for higher education and he is good at fund raising. Those aspects may suffer with his leaving,” said Floyd Bamfield, a graduate student in the College of Business.Binoy Mathew, a senior majoring in English said that finding someone who is as good of a politician and public relations person as Gee will be difficult.Mathew said he thinks that Gee is a good president with a backbone who has contributed a lot to OSU.Despite concerns about who will replace Gee, students also wish him the best. “I hate to see him leave,” Bamfield said. “But if that is the direction he wants to take his life then I wish him the best.”Others want the people at Brown to appreciate the quality of the president they are receiving. “I hope Brown really realizes how lucky they are to have a president like Gordon Gee, he’ll work hard for them and with them,” Chenoweth said.
