Ohio State men’s soccer player Nathan Demian was shot in an off-campus shooting at 262 Chittenden Ave. around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.
Demian, a third-year in computer and information science and defender on the team, was transported to the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center in “serious condition.” As of 2:47 a.m. Sunday morning, Demian was reported to be in stable condition, according to a Columbus Division of Police report.
According to the police report, officers responded to 911 calls reporting the incident at 2:22 a.m. Upon arriving at the scene, they found Demian “hunched over” and complaining of abdominal pain.
Officers then found a gunshot wound in his abdominal region, according to the report.
In a Sunday X post, the Ohio State Police Department said university representatives are “with the student & family providing support,” and would not be releasing more information out of respect for Demian’s family.
The Ohio State Department of Athletics released a statement at 1:32 p.m. Monday, confirming the shooting followed the Ohio State men’s soccer team’s NCAA quarterfinals match against Wake Forest Saturday.
“He was an innocent bystander, is not a suspect in any way, and was not involved in any altercation,” the release states. “The soccer program is thankful for the incredible university support and medical care available to Nathan and his family during this difficult time. Nathan’s family is with him, and the team is extremely close. The family has asked that everyone keep Nathan in their prayers. The department will do all it can to support Nathan, his family and the men’s soccer program in every way possible.”
The Department of Athletics said it cannot discuss the incident further due to the ongoing CPD investigation.
