We are responding to the editorial printed in the Lantern on Oct. 4. We want to specifically respond to the part of the editorial regarding the Younkin Success Center. Essentially we would like to clarify some of the information and assumptions that are errors of fact. We do understand how this could occur, given lack of information and that the advertising campaign directed toward students is planned closer to the opening of the new facility in March 2000.The Success Center is a facility for all Ohio State students. It is the fruition of a collaborative effort between academic affairs and student affairs to enhance students’ success. Several offices that provide services to assist students will be located in this center. These will include a state-of-the-art Academic Learning Lab, Career Connection, Counseling and Consultation Services, Faculty and Teaching Assistant Development, and Student Athlete Support Services. In addition, units that provide academic assistance such as the writing lab and extended instruction will be “virtually” connected and available through kiosks in the main lounge area. While it is true that a significant amount of the funding for this facility has been raised by the Department of Athletics, this is an example where athletic funding is being used to benefit all students. The Younkin Success Center Coordinating Council has been inclusive of faculty and staff from all interested units on campus. Students have been on this committee from its inception. Please look for us in March at 1640 Neil Ave. We are truly excited about our joint venture and our service to all students.
