Prepare yourself for sex – “Sex at the ‘Box,” that is, the Shadowbox Cabaret’s newest showcase of live entertainment.Saturday evening’s show at the Shadowbox Cabaret was both sexy and steamy. An upbeat mood was sparked prior to the show thanks to Rick James and Salt-n-Pepa blaring through the P.A. system. The casual, relaxed atmosphere of the little performance space can make even the uncultured feel right at home. The ‘Box offered drinks and appetizers served by its charismatic actors that completed the comfortable setting.Bill Who?, the Cabaret’s house band, covered a variety of songs including Jimi Hendrix, Fiona Apple and Van Halen. The six-piece band had rotating members, including actors, and still kept a tight sound. The first half of the night consisted of rock ‘n’ roll from Bill Who?, one short 10 minute drama, and one longer comedy act. The short drama, “Touch,” about two exotic dancers, could have been left out of the night’s lineup. It just didn’t fit with the rest of the established merriment. The piece opened at such an emotional point that it left no place to go and much of the audience confused. “Touch” came off as a vehicle to let the actresses be risque. However, it was a pure delight to watch David Schiller and David Whitehouse in the longer act, “Mr. Happy.” This performance was about a fictional soap star named Mike Bullet (Whitehouse) who visits his psychologist (Schiller) with a major problem. The problem is that he can’t get an erection and feels he must maintain his lady killer image. Schiller was hilarious when he coached the star into working through his problem by speaking directly to his dysfunctional organ (hence the name Mr. Happy). The act’s one-liners are given with perfect comedic timing and creativity. The second half of “Sex at the ‘Box” included more rock ‘n’ roll and different comedy skits much like those seen on Saturday Night Live. Favorites included the mock fishing show “Angling for Booty” and “Sex Ed.” Kudos to Robert Foor, who played a crazy stalker during one of the four moments of love poetry. Foor’s character was scary, and he stuck with the portrayal even during curtain call. The men and women of the Shadowbox Cabaret are exceptional at comedy and “Sex at the ‘Box” was pure enjoyment. “Sex at the ‘Box” runs Thursday through Saturday evening until Feb. 28. Student tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance by calling 265-ROCK.
