Lantern should pick on athletes, not greeks
My name is Kevin Gale and I am writing to you from Delta Chi Fraternity. In response to the article on the greek system that appeared in the Lantern on Jan. 14 Nathan Crabbe should do a little more research before he publishes his articles. The greek system at OSU only represents about 5 percent of the student population. That 5 percent does just as much if not more for OSU and the surrounding community than the rest of the student body does combined. As a fraternity or sorority, you are required to do a certain amount of community service projects, which include Adopt A Highway, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Habitat for Humanity. I can not think of any other group here at OSU that requires you to do that to remain here. The entire greek system does fundraising for various youth groups and programs in need such as The National Kidney Foundation. I know that last year, we and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority raised about $2000 alone for the National Kidney Foundation. The greek system is not just about drinking and partying. Whoever Nathan got that quote (“you just drink a lot of beer, and whoever doesn’t puke or touch any members’ girls gets invited to join”), I can almost guarantee you that person is not in a fraternity of sorority. A fraternity or sorority is similar to the Accounting Association, Ski Club, or the Finance Club. You join them not only from a social stand point, but from a networking standpoint. I now have thousands of people spread out across the United States and Canada that will help me find a job when I am in need. I ask you that if you wish to publish any articles like this again, that you allow someone from the greek system to write a reply that will appear below that article. I do not see anyone from your paper attacking the football players for being arrested for using drugs or the university for cutting student funding. Here at OSU, I believe that we have to promote the good and not the bad. The more good things we promote the better we look. That is how Randy Ayers was able to hide all of the problems he had with his basketball teams. Kevin M. GaleDelta Chi fraternity
