A once defunct organization at Ohio State has been revived after two years. The Art Students League is an organization geared toward all art students or anyone with a big interest in art. Interest in the organization has dwindled in the past few years because the previous members graduated, said Georg Heimdal, chairman of the league.Jason Pitz and Jodie Berke, co-presidents of the Art Students League, approached Clarke Stallworth with hopes of restarting the organization. Stallworth is an art faculty member who now serves as advisor for the league.”The Art Students League was designed to give undergraduate art students a forum for discussions about art and the opportunity to put on events,” Stallworth said. The league plans to host many activities in which the art department faculty will be involved, including workshops and seminars to give students more insight to their majors and post-graduate work. “It is definitely something every artist should be involved in,” said Stephen Gross, an art major. “I plan on getting involved.” Heimdal hopes to enhance the quality of life and opportunities for the undergraduate art students through the league. He said he is excited by the group because they seem very energetic, talented and dedicated to making art a part of their lives.”You get so much more out of art when you are involved in it,” Heimdal said.In the future, the league would like to plan field trips to different museums in Ohio and possibly host a trip to New York where members can stay in hotels and visit museums at discounted prices. The league will not ask members to pay dues and plans on being totally self-sufficient by raising money through various fund-raisers. “The students plan on doing a number of things to raise money,” Stallworth said. “They have even talked about pooling their work together for an art sale.”The league suffered from an absence the past few years but will prevail now that it has dedicated new officers, Heimdal said.”They will make a difference on the campus in the next year or so,” he said. “You’ll know they’re around.”
