After starting the day at nine over par, Ohio State golfer Jessica Porvasnik shot a 12-over 82 to miss the cut by 12 strokes at the 2014 United States Women’s Open.
She finished the tournament 149th out of the original field of 156.
Porvasnik’s Friday round at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C., included eight pars and no birdies. She finished the front side with a seven-over 42 before heading to the club house with a 40 on the back nine.
The men’s U.S. Open was held at the same course last weekend.
The Hinckley, Ohio, native qualified for the open after shooting consecutive rounds of 73 at a qualification tournament at the Butler Country Club in Butler, Pa., May 12.
Her first go around at the U.S. Open came after she won two events for the Buckeyes in 2014, which was her freshman season. Along with winning the Big Ten Championship and the Westbrook Spring Invitational, Porvasnik came in the top five at four other tournaments and the top 10 at two other tournaments.
Porvasnik is at least the third Buckeye to have taken part in the U.S. Women’s Open. OSU’s coach, Therese Hession, played in the event seven times, and former Buckeye golfer Meg Mallon won the U.S. Open in both 1991 and 2004.
Out of the 25 amateurs playing in the tournament, Porvasnik finished third to last ahead of Emily Pentilla and Hannah Pietila. Six amateurs made the cut with Australian Minjee Lee carding the best scores — she is in a tie for third at even par heading into the weekend.
Porvasnik is scheduled to begin her sophomore season with the Buckeyes when OSU travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the Chip-N-Club Invitational Sept. 8.
